Dear Rebecca
You were asking about Orchard View, the former home of my wife. The
property was purchased by William Ruttle from a William Doherty of Graigue,
Croagh, Co Limerick on 13 August 1913 although it is possible that he leased
it prior to that date. It is some 50 years since I first visited the farm
and at that time there was no gas or electricity or even running water.
Frequent visits to the water pump up the road !
Phyllis tells me that it is only in recent years that the property was named
Orchard View although recent must mean well over 50 years ! Doherty was the
first registered owner of the land so there are no legal records showing who
farmed it prior to him. It was very similar to the photograph on page 142 of
People Make Places but without the front porch. I say was because it was
burnt down some 20/30 years ago when the thatch had to be replaced by a slate
roof.

So, something about my father in law, William Ruttle.

We go back to Caspar and Sebastian and to Sebastian's son, Daniel, who was
born at Ballingrane in 1730 and who married Barbara. There is some
uncertainty as to the date of death of Daniel although 18 September 1808
seems to be the accepted one. He is buried in the churchyard at Nantenan.
Daniel and Barbara had twelve children amongst whom was George.
George was born at Adare, which I find a little surprising, in 1757 and
married Agnes RUTTLE, who was probably a cousin. They had thirteen children
before George died at Ballingrane on 5 December 1836. He too is buried at
Nantenan.
Of the thirteen, one son was David RUTTLE who was born ABT 1788 and who was
married at Nantenan on 15 February 1821 to Elizabeth BAKER. I have been
unable to find anything out about Elizabeth and wonder if she may have been
the daughter of Michael and Mary BAKER, born 8 April 1804.
David died in 1843. As far as I know, he and Elizabeth had only one son,
Thomas, who was born in 1825, probably at Ballingrane
Thomas was married at Nantenan on 21 February 1871 to Elizabeth LODWICK, a
daughter of Adam abd Sarah LODWICK. She had been born at Court Village on 8
March 1838 and baptised at Rathkeale on 18 March 1838.
They had five children:
a) Elizabeth RUTTLE
b) William RUTTLE, my father in law
c) Catherine RUTTLE
d) Michael RUTTLE
e) Clarinda RUTTLE.
Thomas died aged 76 and was buried at Nantenan on 23 January 1905. I am
uncertain as to when Eluzabeth died and was buried. It could have been at
Askeaton on 12 July 1899 but more likely may have been at Nantenan on 14
September 1923.
More facts to follow as time allows !

Derek
