Judy and Paul,
I did find an earlier Census with many different spellings, different
enumerators, etc...but probably your ancestors. It is the Sligo 1749 Elphin
Census which is on Sheila's website. These are the page numbers and names:
386 Longan, Michael
403 Lonican, Phillip
407 Langan, John
413 Lenican, Richard
417 Lonican, Barthly
417 Lonican, John
421 Lonaghan, William
432 Langhan, Bryan
432 Longan, Owen
432 Longan, Phillip
433 Longon, Teady
445 Loonaghan, John
There are many reasons why they did not show up in the 1858 Griffiths
Valuation, but they were certainly in County Sligo before that! Note the
prevalence of two townlands (p. 417 & 432). Those are: Parish of Calry,
Townland Calgagh and Parish of Drumcliffe, Townlands of Kiltecolly,
Gornagrally and Lisnalurg. So take a look at those two Parish Baptismal and
Marriage Records (Calry and Drumcliffe) for 1800-1860. Also take a look at
the 1901 Census for those Parishes to see if there were any remnants of
their families still there.
