Maureen,
Local papers were usually published weekly and occasionally twice a week.
Therefore, they were unsuitable for death notices. In recent times they
have anniversary notices, month's mind and birth anniversary.

The practice throughout the 20th century and perhaps part of the 19th was to
use the national daily papers. The front page of the London Times carried
death notices and I think the Irish Times did likewise. However, one had to
be 'someone' of note to appear in either Times. The Irish Independent
carried death notices for the whole country on the second page until recent
years. It has now been transferred to the inside of the back page. After the
Civil War some families would not use the Irish Independent and instead used
the Irish Press. With two national daily papers families often used both
(better not to show which side you're on).

National and local papers are available in Dublin and through the British
Library.

Notice of deaths have appeared in local papers in the 19th century but not
to the extent that one would now wish for. The Sligo papers in the Sligo
County Library are:
