Shelia,
Answering your question about Sligo and Mayo County travels:
As Mayo and Sligo abut each other on the ACLARE/SWINFORD ROAD certainly their was travel between the people of the two areas.
However, Tubbercurry is some distance from the closest Mayo border (I traveled it many times myself last year) and I would estimate it is about 10 miles from the Mayo border to Tubbercurry (going through Aclare, Banada, Tourlestrane, Tullamoy...and a few other places on your way if you take the upper road).
If you take the lower road, it cuts out going through all the small towns, and is a bit faster but all you travel through is farming land.
If I can help any more please let me know.

Did families travel a lot back and forth from Mayo county to Sligo county?
I found a William West in Mayo county and an Eliza West who is a teacher at a school in Ballina who then had I think a son Thomas West who became a publican in Tubbercurry and raised his family there.
Also the brother William West of my John West was in Mayo county with the Revenue Police.
Then I think he married and raised his family with his wife Jane Waker in Tubbercurry Sligo County.
