Hi Julie,
I am not an expert and as such am reluctant to venture an opinion on your
query, but here goes;
1. I think the surname King has been extant in Ireland for quite a while,
and there was, for instance, a motor dealership called King and Keating in
Clonmel up to relatively recent times. There are also clusters of this name
in Galway. There is also South King Street in Dublin.
If the name was changed in translation, it would have happened as far back
as the 17th Century, rather than in the 19th.
2. The Irish word for King is Ri (ree), and there are surnames that contain
this root in them. Examples might be Mc Henry (son of the king), Mullery
(maol ri =devotee of the King), Gilroy (Gioll ri=servant of the King), and
other surnames ending in ...rey. It is equally likely that the names may
have Norman origins, based on ...roi (King). However if you are looking for
a phonetic match with Ri, then Rea is the best known derivative in the
Munster/ South Leinster region.A look on Google also suggests that King is
English in origin, derived from the ancient word 'cyning' ( which was
probably a Viking word).

So I suggest you keep looking for the King name to find your ancestors, and
try to establish if they might have come to Ireland with any of the many
armies (Normans, Elizabethans, James etc) or if they came with a skill
(miners, Metalworkers etc).

Good Hunting
