Hello Peggyjane,
There are no records in Ireland of anyone who emigrated to the US or anywhere else in the world for that matter. We lost millions of people from our island and there are no records or historical knowledge here about the vast majority of them. So any information you need about the family in the US would need to be researched in the US. That wouldn't be in County Westmeath or anywhere in Ireland for that matter.
The first excellent resource you have in the US are US census records through 1930 all online and fully searchable. You can search them online at your nearest LDS Family History Centre. Your local public library may also have a subscription to the online US census records from Ancestry or one of the other service providers. When I was in the US last year researching I had to pay the grand sum of $1.00 to search the US census at many LDS Family History Centres there and that was unlimited time until the Centre closed. .
Copy all information about your family from the US census records. Here are copies of all US census forms from 1790 to 1930. The US census contains an incredible amount of information:

You say you believe your Sherwods emigrated in the 1890s. There are no emigration records in Ireland. There are no records of where anyone went or when. All ships passenger records were handed in at the port of arrival. If your Sherwoods went through the Port of New York (Manhattan) after 1892 they may be in Ellis Island records. See: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ If before 1892 they may be in the Castle Garden records. Castle Garden was the port of entry in New York (Manhattan) before 1892. Castle Garden was located where Battery Park is now. Here's the link to Castle Garden ships records: http://www.castlegarden.org/
You'd need to search the US Federal census records to trace what might have happened to Michael in the census. If you believe he went to Batavia, New York, then you can research records in Batavia which is in Genesee County in Western New York State. Genesee County has a genealogy website: see

New Jersey would be your location to search for the marriage records for Mary and Catherine. Here's a link to a New Jersey genealogy website which includes information about researching in New Jersey.
