The copywrite laws are very complex and where it states that the Author has the copywrite then so he/she has it.
Whenever I have used "extracts" from a book you can be rest assured that I have ALWAYS asked the permission of the originator/copywrite owner of the sentence/paragraph/webpage or whatever.
In the case of webpages, you have no problem "making a referal" to a portion of the article but you must include the source of the information and the identity of the webpage by including it's link, not copying and pasting the information "verbatim" . This then gives full credit to the source of the information and it's author.
Hence the reason I guide people to books that are not generally available in their own countries but can be sourced here in Ireland.
Edel is right in what she is saying. In the case of Cantwell's Memorials to the dead for instance, the information itself cannot be copywrite! It is the way in which he has composed the information that is copywrite!
Cemetery inscriptions in themselves ARE NOT COPYWRITE they are there openly for all to see in the public domain.
Anyone can compose a book of inscriptions, if you have the time and the inclination to do so, but do not think you own them, you only own the copywrite on how you put it all together.
