Hello,

I'm new to this list and to Genealogy. This being my first post, I wanted
to introduce myself briefly and include my research interests. My name is
Patrick Payne; I live in Atlanta, Georgia and work for an internet
provider. So, at least I am familar with the 'net. I am researching my
Payne/Paine ancestors and have managed (with great help) to trace them to a
Thomas Paine and wife, Jane Smallpiece, who immigrated to St. Mary's,
Maryland in the year 1664. They were accompanied by daughters: Mary;
Elizabeth (d. 1675); Sarah; and a servant, Margery. While the records do
not confirm their point of departure, I have found references that suggest
Isle-of-Wight, London, or Liverpool. So, here I am digging for clues as I
seem to be out of them from this side of the pond... Thomas died in 1673,
followed by wife Jane in 1675. In her record of death, it mentions other
children as Isaac (d. March 14, 1712/13 m. Sarah Smith *1669*), Joseph,
Hannah, and Rachel- All under 17 years of age in *1675*. The date of
Isaac's marriage and this mention of "Under 17 in 1675" do not agree as
Isaac would have been no older than 11 if he was born after their arrival
in 1664! So, the date of marriage, or the immigration data must be wrong...
Since the trail has turned cold, I'm pinning my hopes on the possibility
that Thomas and Jane orginated from areas of England for which Maryland
towns and counties (where Thomas owned land) were named- Dorset, Somerset,
Dorchester, Worcester... It's also possible that Thomas owned large tracts
along the Rappahannock River in Virginia. Any information or suggestions
would be very welcome!

Happy Holidays!

Patrick Payne
