The Isle of Wight consolidated parish register index, 1539-1858 is an index of
all the parish registers up to 1837, when Civil Registration began, and
includes non-confirmist baptisms up to 1858 and CofE baptisms and burials up
to 1858. Found in the Family History Library Catalog under England, Hampshire
- church records - indexes. Or, enter film 1279001 in the computer catalog and
it will bring up the listing.
It is alphabetical by family name, then within each family grouping first all
baptisms chronologically, then marriages, then burials. I also discovered when
looking at the Urry family that there is a fourth section which indexes many
of the leases and other papers and mentions (sometimes abstracts) wills.
Records from many different sources are included - Winchester wills, PCC
wills, leases from the various collections of the IOW Record Office. It really
is a great help for locating wills which can be scattered amongst so many
repositories.
It takes several rolls of film to cover the entire alphabet and is available
through your local Family History Center for the usual rental charge ($3.75 in
the US). It saves having to go through the individual parishes although you
might want to check the actual record once you have found a date and place.
