Hello List,
Thought you might be interested in this short description of Ryde written
two hundred years ago. Its taken from a reprinted text copy of the British
Universal Directory published by Michael Winton in 1993.
"Ride, about seven or eight miles east from Newport, is a very pleasant
village of some extent, situated one part on a rising-ground, about a
quarter of a mile from the other, which lies close to the edge of the sea.
It is directly opposite to Portsmouth, and has the finest view of Spithead
possible; of course the royal navy may be seen here with the most pleasing
effect. There are a number of very pretty houses about this place, which
are inhabited in the summer-season by very respectable families"
Mostly descriptive, and historical, this directory gives some of the
principal inhabitants of Newport and West Cowes, e.g. Newport Corporation -
Rev. William Dickonson, Mayor - William Clark, Esq. Recorder - Richard
Clark, Esq. Town-clerk. Would be happy to copy to List in small batches but
am not sure of legal position. Anyone like to advise ?
Jeanne in sunny(to-day) Guernsey. With a view of a cruise ship lying off St.
Peter Port as I type, used to be the Royal Navy in years past !
