I'm Pam Barraball and I live in New Malden, Surrey - near Wimbledon.
I work in the archives of the Royal Opera House - most newspaper
readers/TV viewers will be able to imagine how bad that is at the
moment, although archives is an oasis of calm. I do a 3 day week so
in theory have plenty of time for genealogy, but with 4 "children"
(23-30) we see more of since they left home, 3 grandchildren
(7, nearly 5 & 8 months), plus husband Charles, life is pretty busy.
Charles is a surveyor for Southwark Diocese and far more computer
literate but he doesn't tell me to read the manual too often and I
can operate the scanner. Take the plunge, Kathy, all you need are
a few extra hours in the day.
My maiden name was MOORMAN and my 2xgt grandfather George Moorman
left the IOW before 1871. I have traced his family back to his gt.
grandparents Thomas & Mary (nee BAKER) of Chale. Hopefully I will
be able to get back further. My other IOW families are WHITTINGTON
and MEADER.
Charles & I have become hooked on family history. Apart from the
IOW I am tracing my father's families in Thames Ditton, Kingston
& Kennington, Surrey (this last lot - the EARLs - were travellers
so it will probably be a harder slog than any of the others), my
mother's families in Glos. & High Wycomb, & Charles is tracing his
parents' families in Cornwall & Devon. Like Kathy, my main research
is done in the FRC - look for a harassed 57 year old with bulging
handbag - but we did get to the IOW last year & hope to do so again
before too long.
I'm all for the "genealogical mysteries" - the traveller gt.
grandmother was married to a MOORMAN who disappeared to S. Africa.
Their son (my grandfather) was brought up by his grandparents but
*what* happened to his parents?
Pam
