Hi everyone,

I'm Lucy Ruffin and I live in Virginia Beach, VA, USA. I am new to the list
and would like to post a query for the RUFFIN family.

The progenitor of the Ruffin family in America was William Ruffin, who came to
the Virginia Colony in 1635 on board the ship Assurance. He was 18 years old
and we know that he left England from the port of Gravesend. He settled in,
and later became a landowner of, Isle of Wight County, VA.

During this time period there are RUFFINs in Sussex, Kent and Suffolk Counties
in England, but I have been unable to pinpoint our William RUFFIN. I did not
know about the Isle of Wight RUFFINs until I found Jennifer (Mearman) Gibb's
website. I have been unable to contact her, though I have made several
attempts.

Jennifer's info on the RUFFINs is as follows:

Henry RUFFIN, died 7 October 1631 in Newport IW. He married Katherine.
Katherine died 28 October 1631 Newport IW.
Children of Henry RUFFIN and Katherine are:
1. William RUFFIN, died 1657 in Newport IW; married Dorothy.
2. Henry RUFFIN, born 28 November 1586 in Newport IW; died 30 March 1671 in
Newport IW; married Alice GOTER 1613 in Northwood IW.
3. John RUFFIN, born 10 November 1594 in Newport IW; died 1 November 1635 in
Newport IW; married (1) Elizabeth ROGERS 13 April 1615 in Newport IW; married
(2) Sarah COURAGE 9 September 1626.

Jennifer's line continues with Henry, Jr.,......no living son, William.
That leaves the other two sons of Henry, but Jennifer gives no info on their
families. As you can see by the dates, we are in the correct time frame with
this family. William would have been born in 1617.

There is also another RUFFIN in Isle of Wight during this time period
according to the IGI of the LDS church. His name was Josepthe RUFFEN of
Gatcombe, Hampshire, who married Ann ELTON 7 July 1610. Again the correct time period.

So, my big question! Does anyone have further information on the RUFFIN family
of Isle of Wight, England. specifically the children of Henry's two sons,
William and John. Also anything on Josepthe of Gatcombe.
