ELD87/38/17/2 - THE NEWPORT BLUECOAT SCHOOL - a charitable school for poor
girls, was opened in Lugley Street, in 1761. The girls received a basic
education and were taught domestic work, those completing their schooling,
were helped to find employment, usually in service. The school moved to
number 62 Crocker Street by 1880, and a figure of Blue Jenny still
identifies the house. A few of those early records still survive, together
with the name of the parents and the person who presented the girl. Some
had no presenters, but were taken "on the stock". I have put a few of
those admitted below. I do also have the details of the presenters, and
who they went to upon leaving.
