Kate, I have a letter dated 1788 from one William Jacobs to his landlord in Portsmouth stating that he intended to travel to Portsmouth from Whitwell (IOW) to discuss his rent however due to an outbreak of smallpox in Portsmouth he was delaying his trip. The letter indicates that the last time William had been to Portsmouth was the years prior to that.

Does anyone else have any evidence of early 'links' between their Island
ancestors and people on the nearby mainland?

The north-west coast of the island is very close to the mainland where
Fawley and Bealieu are. There were a pocket of RANNs in Fawley and Bealieu
long before the ones on the Island and I'm currently trying to find a link
between them. I've already found that the RANNs in the East Cowes area
(Blacksmiths) originated from one Beaulieu branch, but that wasn't until the
mid 1800s.
