Re Lloyds Captains Register 1851-1947 (if that's what you mean by Lloyds
List of Master Mariners) there isn't a microfilm copy on the Island to my
knowledge (but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong). I looked
at the one at the PRO when I was up in London in my summer hols and it was
so bad quality wise that I vowed never to look at it again but go to
Guildhall Library instead (where the Lloyds collection is). If nobody on
Mariners List does lookups I suspect you'll have to pay a researcher who
is London based and a maritime specialist so they know which records to
look at and the quick ways round them. The original record (in the
records of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen who sent the
information on to Lloyds) is in classes BT 122 - 127 at the PRO at Kew,
arranged in order of certificate number but with nominal indexes (after
about 1913 the Captains Register extends the date and amount of
information available)
For those on the List who have merchant seamen ancestors but have not yet
explored this aspect of their lives you can find information on how to go
about it at http://www.pro.gov.uk and on the Mariners List website (which
also tells you how to subscribe and post messages) at
http://www.Mariners-L.freeserve.co.uk
Happy hunting
