Hi Anne
Your 1891 census look up request may not get a response as that census is
not indexed. If you were unable to find the place on the census there are
several possibilities. It may not have been listed as a separate named
address or as Rayners Grove (on modern maps and in the book Placenames of
the Isle of Wight it is called Rains Grove) - did you actually find
Rowborough? It may be that the census enumerator didn't get there, lost
the form or misfiled it. Might it have changed areas - i.e. not be listed
in St Nicholas? If you do not already know St Nicholas was the church in
Carisbrooke Castle and did not have a consolidated parish as we would
normally think of it - it consisted of scattered pockets of land all over
the Island. It might just be worth checking with the IW Record Office in
case they know whether St Nicholas was listed separately or whether the
Rowborough area was just included in Carisbrooke in the 1891 census.
Have you checked the IWRO baptism index in case the family's children were
baptised in parishes/chapels covered by it - if so you would know whether
the family were still at Rains Grove or had moved. If you have not
previously visited/contacted the IWRO you will find information on the IW
Family HIstory Society's webpage at http://www.dina.clara.net/
A good place to start for finding out how to trace maritime ancestors is
the information on the Mariners List website at

Happy hunting
