Dear Denise,

My 3 x great grandmother, Matilda CAWS -
born ca. 1793, St. Helens (1851 census)
married 26 May, 1814 William MIDLANE (IGI)
died 11th August, 1868, St. Helens, (death certificate)

In William's will, dated 1839, he names "my friends Silas Harvey CAWS and Richard CAWS, son of Richard CAWS both of Seaview" as Executors.

Peter Gawn of the IoW FHS tells me that there was a Richard CAWS, senior, pilot, owner of the "Rose" of Nettlestone in 1808. Also he lists Richard CAWS, junior, Pilot, Nettlestone, 1808 and Silas H. CAWS master mariner, Ryde, 1878.

I noticed (as you have probably done) in the IoW FHS newsletter, in the list of M.I.'s a Stanley CAWS, Lieutenant, R.A.F., killed in 1915, age 36, grandson of Silas Harvey CAWS but I do not seem to have looked on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website to see if there is any more information.

I have some more slightly fluffy information about a Mary CAWS.

Hoping this is of some use to you. The above may be the parents of the people you are looking for?

Good hunting, Anne Grant.

G'day Anne,

Saw your recent interest in the surname of CAWS, Silas on the IOW Digest and I haven't written sooner as we have been away on holidays and now attempting to "catch up" on the Digests since Easter.

I do have a Silas CAWS but very little detail and wondered if your Silas and mine are the same connection. The Silas I have is actually the father in law of a distant cousin. The details I have are as follows:

Silas CAWS
| William Henry CAWS (abt 1858 - )
| bd. abt 1858
| & Jane BUTLER (bef 1858 - )
| bd. bef 1858
| bpd. ? Aug 1858, GS Ryde Cong, IOW, ENGLAND
| m. 3 Oct 1886, Bembridge, IOW, ENGLAND

The date times are around the same so they could be the same. I am mainly interested in any descendants of the marriage of William Henry and Jane.

I would be pleased to hear from you if you have (or have not) any details on these families. Many thanks,

Kind regards,

Denise Brown,
