George
I may be able to help a bit with Robey Eldridge. The Eldridge name appears
in my family database thanks to connections to the PITTIS family, though
currently I cannot make the connection between my PITTIS (Edward) and the
rather better known family, that includes Francis, mayor of Newport and
knight of the realm.

I suspect that your Robey ELDRIDGE is the father of Robey ELDRIDGE born 13
Aug 1806, who married Jane PITTIS, Dec 1832. jane was daughter of Francis
PITTIS and Jane TUCKER. Francis was, amongst other things, an auctioneer,
the founder of the firm that is now called Sir Francis Pittis & Son (though
it is his son that was knighted), the Estate Agents.

Robey Eldridge (b1806) was the Rector of Desford, Leicestershire. Rev Robey
and Jane had at least 8 children, some I know were buried on the Island, but
I don't know where they were born. One of the children was also called Robey
who I think was a Solicitor (the firm of Eldridge is still in Newport).
Robey also had a son Robey James who married Agnes Dorothy Way Buckell in
1916, a descendant of Thomas PITTIS & Mary CLARKE.

Theres probably some more information I could provide though as I have not
yet established relationship I have not followed this up very much.

> Does anyone have any information on Robey ELDRIDGE?
> I am following the WAY family on the Isle of Wight. My branch came down
from William WAY who married Mary WHITEHEAD of Brighstone. Their son (also
William) lived in Newport (and London) where he ran grocery businesses.
>
> However, one of their daughters, Catherine WAY (born 10/02/1765), married
Robey ELDRIDGE at Newport (both of that parish) by licence on 19/07/1804.
> Catherine was 39 at marriage and I have no record of any children, though
Catherine's bachelor brother, James WAY, left part of his estate to the
children of his brother-in-law, Robey ELDRIDGE.
>
> I was very interested when someone on the list referred to a Thomas WAY
ELDRIDGE, 1805 - 1895. It seems too much of a coincidence for someone of
that unusual name born the year after the WAY-ELDRIDGE marriage not to be
related. There may have been siblings as well.

> One source says that Robey ELDRIDGE was a timber merchant of Whippingham.
> His great nephew, Broadley Wilson WAY, is recorded in the register of St
Thomas Newport as baptised on 07-12-1831 by Robey ELDRIDGE. Was Robey
ELDRIDGE then ordained? The minister of the time (Geary) was very close to
the end of his long life.
> Broadley's parents named their next child Robey Gordon WAY, possibly after
Robey ELDRIDGE.
