Actually it is not even the medal rolls - it is the index cards to the medal
rolls and I think it is for the first world war only.

To view the medal rolls themselves you still have to go to the National
Archives. When you pay to see the card you want, you actually get six for
the price of one...usually people with the same surname. With distinctive
IOW surnames there is the potential for some useful information sharing!

The national archives web site has a lot of information about how to search
and the information that is likely to be obtained

I have bought a couple of the cards and in one case it revealed some very
useful information about a relative. I knew he had served with the Black
Watch, and had his service number for that regiment (you guessed...he wasn't
from the IOW!), but the index card also had a note of another service number
relating to the Labour Corps. Turns out he was injured and was not fit
enough to return to the front so was sent to the labour corps in a support
capacity....I am currently following up that lead which I wouldn't have
known about unless I had seen the index card.

For the avoidance of confusion, these are NOT the service records but,the
medal rolls - showing regiment, medals awarded and sometimes first theatre
of war.
