Hi List!
It has occurred to me that it is JUST possible that some of you may have
memories of my ALLEN family, or have older relatives who do. Figured it was
worth a try anyway, here is what I know.
John Henry Denham ALLEN married Annie Maria LAWES in Ryde in 1911. They
were my grandparents. They had Nigel John, and Phyllis May, my mother.
They emigrated to Canada in the 1920's. In due course my mother married and
had me, unfortunately I was not interested in family history until a few
years ago, and never asked my mother to write down whatever she knew about
her family. It is now too late as she died three years ago, my uncle died
before I was born, and my cousins really don't know any history either.
Here are various scraps regarding people and places, in the hope that
something will ring a bell with someone!
My grandfather was an electrician, had a shop, wired the parish church.
Shop later became a toy shop (this could be as late as the 1980's, my mother
told me she went to see the outside of the shop while on a trip from Canada
but did not go in).
They lived at various addresses in Ryde, I know of Star Street and Monkton
Street, West Place (?), and a house called Jubilee Cottage. I have a photo
labelled Spring Vale c. 1908, do not know if this is a house, a street or an
area - it is a street scene.
Went to school at Green Street or Player Street school. One of the teachers
or the head was a Bob Welch.
My mother had a friend called Dolly Blow or Dolly New (one is her married
name), think my mother may have visited this friend in 1971 or in the
1980's.
J H D Allen was a Buffalo, became a member of Clarence Lodge in 1914. I
have a large cardboard citation or whatever you would call it, framed and
hung.
Three friends of J H D were Charlie Boughton, Alex Jacobs, and Wilf Hazard.
I have a handpainted item given to J H D by these friends for his wedding,
they called themselves the XNTRIX CLUB.
Hope this of interest, something a bit different from the usual run of
lookups! Happy to cudgel my brain for more, if you have any different
scraps!
Regards
Bev in Belfast (came the other way!)
