Hi all,
I just returned home from the movie and have to say I enjoyed it immensely.
I bought the DVD mainly because there were so many times when the audience
reaction was so loud you couldn't hear the next 30 seconds!
They kept it to strictly Federal Hill memoirs so obviously there were a lot
of other RI families who weren't mentioned. Nevertheless, it would have
taken forever to fit any more info into the documentary. It was chock-full.
One thing I found particularly amusing was the little discussion on "sauce"
vs. "gravy". One person related that his mother called it "gravy" to family
members and "sauce" when others were around. She said "gravy" was the term
used by "cavonnes" (sp?)!
The writers and producers didn't shy away from any of the issues of
discrimination (mostly from the Irish) or the mob or any of that. I think
they did a very nice job of showing Italian-Americans as hard-working people
who became a vital and contributing part of society. They must have been
working on this film for a few years because it included several clips of
Buddy Cianci, who, for those who may not know was the mayor of Providence
who is now in a federal prison.
As for obtaining the DVD, they said it won't be available to order for
another week. I have a phone number but am unsure whether or not I'm
allowed to post it here. Would someone let me know? Thanks.
Note to Lisa....You're right...the DVD will make a great Christmas gift. I
bought 2 so far.
Ciao, ciao,
Jann
