Hi Jim,

My grandmother was born 19 January 1898 in
Castelpizzuto, Campobasso, Italy. After ordering the
birth records for Campobasso, Italy, 1894-1898 from my
local Family History Center, I was disappointed as I
found no record of her birth.
Questions:
1. Did all births require registration?
Yes, all births during this time period required registrations. But not
every birth was registered. In Abruzzi where I am currently researching it
was not uncommon for births not to be registered for several months or
years. My grandmother was born in 1888 but her birth was not registered
until she got married in 1914. So, it did happen.

2. Would vital records from Campobasso also include
records from Castelpizzuto? (i.e. did I order the
wrong film?)
No, you may want to think of it this way. New York City (Campobasso) has a
records for their births that occur within the city. Other counties in the
state of New York (Castelpizzuto) have records of their own births. All the
records are sent to the archives which are located in New York City but they
are in separate books. What you may have looked at is the records for
Campobasso but it did not include the other comunes in that providence but
just the capital city itself.

The film number that you are going to want is:

Nati 1866-1875 Indice decennali dei nati 1866-1875 Nati 1876-1899
Notificazioni 1866-1899 Matrimoni 1866-1880 Indice decennali dei matrimoni
1866-1875 Matrimoni 1881-1899 Morti 1866-1899 -- VAULT INTL Film
1693286 Items 5-18.

Note here that you have to go to item #5 before items for the comune of
Campobasso to start. The beginning of the film will probably have another
comune on it.

3. I know that Isernia is now the governing region of
Castelpizzuto, when did the change take place? -- Sorry I cannot
immediately answer this question. But without research from the top of my
head . . . the 1970's????

Good Luck in your search!

Anna Alfonsi Cotter
