A belated thank you to Freddie for sending me the Anglo Italian newsletter.
Lots of great stuff in there.

Listers, dont make the mistake of some other lists (nameless!) where they
forget that the rest of Europe exists! ;-) Some of your ancestors may not
have travelled direct to the US and some may have deliberately headed for
Britain. Maybe they liked the rain. Maybe they couldn't afford the fare all
the way across the Atlantic.

Maybe they travelled via Liverpool and someone died, or they found work.

I have often found that a bit of sideways research can answer the questions
in the direct line so dont forget the UK relations.

The most useful basic resources are:
FreeBMD - access via the Rootsweb main page.

The IGI of course.

The 1881 census - available from LDS on disc, and the BVRI (ditto).

The 1901 census whenever the PRO gets its act together and gets it back on
line.

And Scots Origins. www.scots-origins.com. Here you can do a free surname
search and the records go up to recent times.

Also libraries eg www.nls.ac.uk and archive databases via www.hmc.gov.uk
(look for National Register of Archives)

You can also visit the main Public Record Office site at www.pro.gov.uk to
search the catalogue and also download some documents such as wills.

Have fun.

Judy
