Hello Dick.........It was so good to hear from you and Agnes. Glad Agnes'
eye surgery was successful even if you do look uglier to her now! :-) Don
keeps saying, "Getting old, isn't for wimps"! But no one likes the
alternative to getting old! So we just grin and bear it! LOL
I hope you don't mind if I post your email to the Ivey-kin list.....maybe we
will get a response from Nancy Williams and Kim Holly. I have been wondering
about them, too. The last I heard from Kim, she was very busy doing some
volunteer work on Rootsweb (I think) transcribing some records from Illinois.
I guess Nancy is busy, too, she may still be working AND attending college,
if so...that probably keeps her pretty busy.
I think you are right about James and Curtis. Although it appears that
Curtis and his parents may have come from Ireland in the late 1700's since we
have those scissors with the inscription on them. William Curtis Ivie (son
of Curtis) had the scissors and now a descendent, Kara Jan Scott, has them.
The scissors were inscribed "Brought to the US by Grandfather Ivie from
Ireland in 1791". So it would seem likely that William had them incribed and
it was referring to Curtis' father as the one that brought them to this
country. What a treasure! Jan has promised to take pictures and send us a
copy. My guess would be that Curtis was probably 5 or 6 years old and came to
the US with his parents in 1791, and the scissors were part of their personal
belongings. Who knows, maybe Curtis' dad was a tailor and those scissors had
special meaning because of that. And it could be that he also happens to be
James father. Maybe we could trace them through immigrant records. James
was probably born after they came to the US. Now, just where they entered
the county and how they got to Indiana (then later to Illinois) sure would be
interesting to know. I have an idea that they came to the US through
Virginia, since some census records seem to indicate that Curtis was born in
Virginia.....of couse some indicate England....so who knows! Maybe the
family went to England from Ireland and then Curtis was born and then they
immigrated to the US. I have a lot of "what ifs" but it is fun to
speculate about it. Just wish we could find their tracks along the way! And
it is very likely that they are related to some of those Ivie families in
Virginia.
Well, I heard from Walter Ivey, too. I think I will post both emails to the
Ivey-kin list so all the others can read what's going on with all of us.
(I'm sorry if some of you get this twice, as I'm not sure how many of you are
subscribed to the IVEY-KIN list, especially if you have a new email address.)
Talk to you later....
Sue and Don
