BOOK REVIEW: Recently published, "Images and Chronicles from the Archives of the Kerryman Newspaper -- A Portrait of Kerry in the Twentieth Century," compiled and edited by Peter Malone (The Kerryman Ltd, Clash, Tralee, Co. Kerry). This is not another Kerry picture book glowing with trumpeting sunsets, rosy dawns, silvery lakes and purple mountains. There are pictures like that of an obviously elderly couple jailed for three months in 1929 for failure to prove that they entitled to the old age pension - on release both were reduced to breaking stone for the Council for a living. A Luftwaffe Condor wrecked on Mount Brandon (1940). A threshing machine husking corn (1946). Electric lighting for the Black Valley (1977). Test drilling rigs on the Porcupine Bank (1978). President (U. S.) Bill Clinton golfs at Ballybunion (1998). A photograph of the late John B. Keane (1950s), etc.
