Does anyone know who the Susannah Foreman who married a Brett belongs to?  I haven't come across her anywhere in my searches.

Thanks for replying, I am not sure if any of these Bretts link into ours,
but I will keep a note of them, we have a database of Kent Bretts!

Carole Brett

Dear John,
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I have a William Richard Mortley, born about 1847 at
Margate, who married an Agnes Ann Wren from a branch of my Sandwell family.
At the 1881 census, William is a coastguard in Lincolnshire.? Agnes and
William had four children that I know of.? I would be happy to exchange info
if this family is of interest to you.

Best wishes,

John

There are cheaper copies available. If you go into www.abebooks.co.uk and search under the author and title, then sort the results by "lowest first", you will find there are copies of the original edition under 8 pounds in America and the cheapest of the reprint is under 14 pounds. There are about 6 pages with Thanet info on and I'd be happy to scan them. My copy came from the US and the name of the original owner is inside - a German name. I found the book as it was mentioned in The Third Kentish Patchwork by Robert Goodsall, when he was describing WW2 in Harrietsham, where he lived.

All the best

Margaret

I've just read a book called The Last Ditch by David Lampe, about the Resistance organisation which was set up in the UK in WW2 in case the Germans landed. There was some information about Thanet. The Resistance group leader for Thanet was Norman Steed, a farmer from Manston Grove. The group used existing tunnels in the chalk from smuggling days as hideouts. Another hideout was under a brickyard about a mile south-west of Margate. Most of the hideouts were destroyed at the end of the war. The other name mentioned in Thanet is a radio operator called Lamont.
