Hi Folks,

Yes it is me again, but bound to finding the father to my William JAMES b.
abt 1781? VA.? m. Nancy SCOTT b. TN? I have a letter from my nephew to our
cousin. That has got me a going again. I feel strong that if the connection
is made there is a lot of you out there that will connect to this line.
That's from I have seen on the internet with James List.

My nephew Bruce wrote cousin Norman.

The Journey of Jesse James, Sr., to TN

William James and Nancy Scott James indicated they were born in VA. You have
searched for traces of them in VA and I have done the same. You have found
nothing and so have I. Now that we have the name of Jesse James as the
father of William, we can go back to the available records for VA. However,
I now believe there is an additional route the family might have taken to TN
. The first route, as before, was through the Great Valley of VA. The
second route was from VA to TN, via NC. I believe this second route is a
strong possibility.

"Enclosed are summaries of census records (I don't have) for NC from 1784-
1810. In 1784-1787, a Jesse James lived in Northampton County, MC. This
county borders VA. If William James was born on or around 1781 in VA, then
the family possibly moved to NC shortly after the Revolutionary War. That
would help to explain the lack of a Jesse James on a tax list in VA. The
accumulated tax list of VA in the 1780's became the reconstructed census of
1790.

I don't know if any of the Jesse Jameses shown in the NC census summaries
moved to TN. But is now possible to search for James family marriages in NC
. We might even find the marriage of William and Nancy. If not that lucky,
we might find the marriages of some of the other children listed in the will
of Jesse James. Other NC records can also be searched."

Here is the names of the children from Jesse James Sr. m. Phoebe (Feby)?,
Will dated 17 Feb 1814, Blount County, TN. William, 1781?, John, went to
Monore Co., TN?, Andrew, Rebecca m.GRIGSBY, went to Roane Co., TN? Hannah m
. HARRISON, went to Monore Co., TN?, Phoebe (Feby) m. MONTGOMERY, Benjamin,
1791-1858 or Apr/16/1790-Jul/13/1856, Patsey/Patty, Jesse Jr., went to
Monroe Co., TN?, James Mc., Mary (Polly) m. MONTGOMERY, and Elizabeth.

Now for more information on William and Nancy they had thirteen children all
born to what I have in TN. In 1830 and 1840 the family lived in Monore Co.,
TN, in 1850 they were on both the McMinn Co., TN., and the Murray Co., GA
censuses. We believe that William got a grant for service in the War of
1812. His grant number was 17,399 for 80 acres in Murray Co., GA.. Between
1850 and 1860, Murry Co., GA., was divided into two counties; one part
retained the original name, and the other new Co., was named Whitfield.
Thus, on the 1860 census William and several of his sons were found in
Whitfield Co.. William was 79 years old at the time.
