Re: the identity of John Garrett Sr.'s 2nd wife, Margaret James

After much research I have come to this conclusion concerning her, and am
convinced enough that my records have been changed to reflect this.

We knew that she was a Widow when he married her, and it was assumed that
'James' was her married name. I now believe that it was her maiden name.

I believe she was born Margaret James, daughter of William James. Her
siblings were: Jane (who married William Buckingham in 1728), William Jr. and James
James. William James Sr. was a millwright, with a mill & plantation on
Christiana Creek. He died in 1707/8.

I believe Margaret was the widow of John Scott of Kennet, who died in 1726
and left a Will and settlement papers that I have. The Will stated that his wife
and daughter were unnamed and that she was expecting another child. I believe
that these two children were the daughters, Margaret and Sarah. I believe the
second daughter was born when Margaret & John were already married and he
raised them as his own.

Executors of the Will were John Heath and William Buckingam, and witnessed by
Joseph Garrett. This is the John (and Hannah, who was the sister of this
William Buckingham) who witnessed the settlement of account when Thomas II 's 2nd
wife died and Grandfather Thomas Garrett I gave Power of Atty to his Grandson,
John in 1730. This is the William Buckingham who witnessed John's Will in
1749 .

In John Scott's settlement papers, is stated:
"83 pounds 16 shilling 1 pence PAID TO JOHN GARRET & HIS WIFE, SHE WAS YE
WIDDOW OF YE SD JOHN SCOTT DEC'D"

I think this is where John got the 81 pounds to buy the Mill Land in 1726
from Wm McMahan. It all fits together -- they were Baptists from Burmingham Twn.,
as was this Joseph Garrett, who I believe was John's brother, and the one he
followed down to (now) Loudoun Co. Va.

Just sharing my information, it can either be accepted or rejected by those
interested.

Carol Garrett
