Thank you Chris for the Shetlands websites and information on Patronymics. I
did not realize this system of naming reached into the 1800's. So if my
Jameson ancestor immigrated from the Shetlands to the U.S.A. in about 1750,
tracing this family "back home" would be quite confusing -- Unless James and
Jamie were extemely unusual forenames.

Was the practice of Patronymics used on mainland Scotland? If so when?
