865 ROBERT MARTIN

Robert Martin was the eleventh child of Joshua and Sarah (Shields) Martin. He was born on January 26, 1846 in Walker County, Georgia.

During the Civil War he fought with Company "C" of the 1st Georgia Infantry. He enlisted at Marietta in January 1864. In September of 1864, he was captured near Atlanta, Georgia and held prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio until May 1865. Late in life he received a pension from the state of Georgia for this military service.

On July 25, 1869, Robert married Eliza E. Jay, daughter of David, Jr. and Elizabeth (Wallace) Jay. Eliza was born December 3, 1846.

>From 1911 to 1912 Robert served as Walker County Tax Collector.

Robert and Eliza were the parents of five children:

Infant son, unnamed, buried at Gordon Cemetery.

Infant daughter, unnamed, buried at Gordon Cemetery.

Hayden Farris, born January 22, 1881, died May 10, 1883, buried Gordon Cemetery.

Robert Gordon, born September 3, 1883, married Rebecca Bowman, died March 4, 1974. Robert and Rebecca were parents of Scott, Newell, Herman, Augusta, Weldon, Mary Kathryn, Dunaway and Bobbie Ray.

George Samuel, born October 6, 1888, died July 7, 1965. He was survived by his widow, Amye (Carlock) Martin, of Portales, New Mexico. Amye was the daughter of Benjamin LaFayette Carlock and Annie Hunt. George and Amye have three children: Hayden DeForest; Lucille, married Lewis Cooper; and Harold Eugene. The latter two were born in Celina, Texas.

Eliza E. Martin died November 5, 1917 in Celina Texas. Robert died September 19, 1923, the last survivor of Joshua's twelve children.
