Dear Cuzzins,
Maybe this is of interest. Don't have much on this war, my books are
old, but the reference dept in local library probably has more on this.
I believe I found lots and lots of books titled "The War of Jenkins Ear"
in the Library of Congress, on their web site. But this is what little I
have:
Sir Robert Walpole became England's first prime minister. In 1739 the
British people became aroused over the story of Robert Jenkins, a sea
captain, who claimed the Spaniards had boarded his ship and cut off his
ear. Walpole was persuaded to declare war against Spain in 1739----the
War of Jenkins' Ear. During this time in the colony of Georgia, General
James E. Oglethorpe had returned from
England (1736) with more colonists, including 150 Scottish Highlanders.
They were well trained soldiers, ready to defend the colony. In 1742,
Spaniards from
Florida landed 3,000 men on St. Simons Island. Their aim was to destroy
the settlement at Frederica. They were defeated by Oglethorpe at the
battle of Bloody
Marsh.
That is how the 2 were kind of linked together. British liked to fight,
didn't they?
If you are looking for "The Robert"....this is the place I suggest you
look for one of
them. This guy was a sea Captain and for sure he probably went from our
waters back and forth to England and probably had land in both places and
a family here.
I know Lew was looking for a Jenkins by the name of Robert and we nick
named him "The Robert"....
Hope this helps,
Your cuzzin,
Susan of Tidewater VA
