" Lewis Jenkins I was probably born in the last decade of the 17th
century , perhaps in 1692 . Lewis Jenkins I in 1734 was at Edenton where
he was representative for Currituck County, North Carolina and served on
a committee. He was appointed justice of the peace for Currituck in 1734
, and again in 1739 . Soon after , he removed to Onslow County where a
county seat had been established at Courthouse Bay and new settlers were
moving in rapidly . The Assembly at New Bern , December 4 , 1744 ,
omitted his name on the list of justices for Currituck but added his
name to the list of appointees for the new county , supporting other
evidence that Lewis Jenkins of Onslow County , North Carolina , was the
Lewis Jenkins descended from Elizabeth City officials. The Clerk of the
Court at Onslow , William Crafford , died soon after July 4 , 1744 . He
was succeeded by Thomas Black as Clerk , and by Lewis Jenkins as
Register . In 1745 , Lewis Jenkins I as Register recorded instructions
issued by local authorities to Thomas Jenkins to inspect a survey . In
1748/49 , Lewis Jenkins was a witness with James Crafford to the sale of
the latter's younger brother , John , of 175 acres to John Wilkins on
the east side of New River , and in 1749 Lewis Jenkins witnessed
another sale of land , formerly the property of the Crafford family.
Appointments to the position of justice of the peace for Onslow County
approved at New Bern , March 27,1751 , included the names of both Lewis
and Thomas Jenkins . They were related but they were not brothers . Both
lived on the west side of New River near the plantation of Henry Rhodes
, named sheriff in 1762 and one of hte county's prominent citizens. The
Rhodes properties were in the area now called Rhodes Point. Lewis
Jenkins , the county Register , married Isabella . He made his will July
25 , 1763 and died by October 5 , 1763 when William Cray succeeded
Jenkins as Register . His children were : (1)

1. Elizabeth Jenkins ; born about 1735 ; married 1756 William King

2. Henry Jenkins

3. Lewis Jenkins II ; died dabout 1800 , Green County , Georgia ;
married Hannah ----.(2)

4. Isabella Jenkins ; probably died soon after 1750 . (1)

I have received a posting from someone on the list that indicated that
the wife of Lewis Jenkins II was named Hannah Law . I also recently
received a pedigree chart from my Aunt Peggy which showed that as a
possibility too....thank you both very much. Lewis and Hannah (Law)
Jenkins were the parents of Jesse Jenkins , my g-g-g-g-grandfather. I
have a few more pages to transcribe , but they'll have to wait until a
little later...I'm not a fast typist and my hands are sore ( how I hate
to admit that)....later , Malinda Jones
