Subject: James Harvey STRAIN family (Marion Co. IN to Montgomery Co. MO) 1823-1901
Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 12:38:15 EST

This is being sent to several county and surname lists, a few individual
researchers and Roots-L...hopefully someone will recognize something.
Anthing with a connection to this family is getting this note.

Seeking all information on the family of James Harvey STRAIN.
James Harvey STRAIN 1823 Marion Co., IN -1901 Montgomery Co., MO
marr 1842 Lydia ARISMAN 1820 VA - 1897 Montgomery Co., MO
Children:
Mary Mariah 1846- bef 1901
Sarah Jane 1847-
Louisa Ellen 1849-bef 1901
Nelson Clark 1851-1935 m Sarah HOFFMAN moved to Tulare, CA
Nancy Ana 1855-
Margaret 1856- bef 1901
Charles Wilson 1858 -1922 m. Mary HOFFMAN moved to Twin Falls, ID
Joseph Marion 1844-1891

The HOFFMAN girls are sisters, daughters of William HOFFMAN of Montgomery
Co., MO. William HOFFMAN and Sarah Hoffman STRAIN is buried in McQuoid
Cemetery, Montgomery, MO, as are a son of Charles Wilson and my great-aunt
Annie May STRAIN (1909-1911).

Annie May is the daughter of James Joseph H. STRAIN (1876/8 to ca1932) and
Anne Lucy JENKINS (1881-1923, daughter of William JENKINS and Sarah Hunt
JENKINS of Audrain Co., MO) of Montgomery County MO. JJH STRAIN used the
given name of Joseph in 1900 (Upper Loutre Twp, MO) and James in 1910 (Upper
Loutre Twp, MO). I have just recently discovered that this family was living
in St. Louis City between about 1913 and at least 1923, though I still need
to find that census entry.

I have the strongest feeling that JJH STRAIN may be the son of the above
mentioned Joseph Marion STRAIN, but I have no evidence at all. JJH is the
only "unattached" STRAIN in Montgomery County, MO living on his own in 1900
at the age of 22 or 24. I'm pretty sure that JJH is not a child of Charles
Wilson. I'm less sure that he is not a child of Nelson Clark. I have never
seen anything on Joseph Marion so I'm trying to focus on him. JJH was a
sawmill worker in case that rings any bells.

The only Joseph indexed in Missouri in 1870 (that I can find) is in Vernon
County which I believe is too far away. Where was Joseph Marion STRAIN in 187
0? Where did Jos. Marion STRAIN die? guess a big clue would be...who did Jos.
Marion STRAIN marry, if anyone. Who did the sisters of CW, NC and JM marry?

Any STRAIN researchers out there interested in this family, please contact me.
