Subject: [J-R] KROITOR surname

Dear List members,

I am new to the list. I have just begun researching my family history. My
Grandmother was Victoria Amelia Kroitor, born in 1908 in Cairo, Egypt. She
married my Grandfather in Cairo in 1929. On the marriage certificate her
nationality was noted as Russian. I also have a copy of a letter from the
Russian Office in Cairo confirming her birth registration.

Through a Russian mailing list I got to find out that it is likely that her
father, John Kroitor, escaped from Russia to Egypt during the first Russian
Revolution of 1905. His name originally may have been Ivan, not John.

I believe my Grandmother was a Christian; certianly married my Grandfather in a
Christian Church. However I am thinking that the surname KROITOR is Jewish.

Can anyone tell me anything about the surname, if it is Jewish or not and if it
is, why that Jewishness might have been lost?

Many thanks,
