Item Description:

Kentucky Archives, Johnson County Vital Statistics 1843-1904. Charles C. Wells. (1979), 1993. Hardbound, green cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front cover, as new, Index, 336 pp.According to the author: Dr. William L. Sutton, of Georgetown, Ky., first President of the Kentucky Medical Association, was the father of Vital Statistics in Kentucky. Due to his efforts, Kentucky was the first state west of the Allegheny's to have a law passed requiring the registration of births, deaths and marriages. These records were to be deposited with the County Clerk by the 10th of January of each year. The Clerk was to deliver copies of these records to the Tax Assessor, who in turn would provide copies to the State Auditor. Under pressure from the ensuing War Between the States, and with an urgent need for funds for other purposes, the General Assembly repealed the Registration Law on August 26th, 1862. It was not until 1910 did Kentucky re-enact a registration law. In 1920, t!
he Kentucky Historical Society began to salvage the remnants of these records kept from 1852 to 1862. While incomplete, these records do furnish a partial summery of the births, deaths and marriages during this period. In order to make the marriage section as complete as possible, I have used the Johnson County Marriage Book 1, which covers the period from April 1843 to October 1861. This register is a combination of two registers. The first covers the period from 1843 to 1856 and the other covers the period from 1856 to 1861. I have included the page number where the record will be found. The reader should be aware that I have used the information from the marriages found in the vital statistics section and included it with the record found in the marriage register. Should you obtain a copy of the original marriage record, it may not contain all the information shown in this book. The list of Confederate Veterans was compiled from The History of the Orphan Brigade, by Ed !
P. Thompson, private papers, 1890 Veterans Census and material supplied by John B. Wells, LU, Genealogist General, Sons of Confederate Veterans. I am indebted to Mr. Wells for his assistance in verifying the service of these veterans. This list of both Union and Confederate Veterans is by no means complete. It is estimated that during the War Between the States between 350 to 400 Johnson Countians served the cause of the Confederacy and an equal number served in the Union army. I have tried to copy these Vital Statistics as accurately as possible, but it must be remembered that mine is at least the third copy of the original information. Some records have had the ink fade to a point where it is difficult to accurately decipher. The hand writing of other records is very poor. Many of the names have been spelled phonetically and, depending on the education of the clerk, are written in various forms. With all this copying, and compounded by the condition of the record, there !
must be errors. When used with other sources, these statistics should provide assistance in solving many of the problems for the genealogical researcher for this area of eastern Kentucky, for they cover not only present day Johnson County, but parts of Magoffin, Lawrence, Morgan, Floyd and, to the year 1870, over a third of Martin County.
