Hi Listers
This is my first day on the list. I have run into a brick wall in
trying to trace my maternal grandfather's family. My grandfather was
Andrew JOHNSTON. According to his death certificate, he was born in
Edinburgh on 16 January 1888, although he grew up in Aberdeen. He was a
"joiner", a member of the Masons, and worked on the construction of
ships (including the TITANIC for Harland and Wolfe in Belfast and at
another shipyard at Clyde Bank). He worked on the fine carpentry in the
first class cabins and salons.
His father was also Andrew JOHNSTON, and his mother was Mary, but I do
not have her maiden name. His father was a ship's Captain in the
British Merchant Marine and was on the European run from Aberdeen. I do
not know the name of his ship, which is apparently required to do a
research of the Merchant Marine. Both the father and mother were listed
on my grandfather's death certificate as being born in the Orkney
Islands.
My grandfather had two brothers. Albert was employed as the Chief
Wireless Operator on the international wireless system at Rugby England
when he was visited by his nephew Norman Johnston during the Second
World War. Albert's mother, Mary Johnston was living with him at the
time. His brother Robert was killed in a motorcycle accident when he
was engaged to be married. Date and place unknown.
As you all know, Andrew Johnston is a very common name in Scotland. I
understand that the 1891 census for Scotland has not been released.
Without the maiden name of my great grandmother, I cannot narrow the
search down.
If the above people sound familiar, or if you could give suggestions on
how to proceed from here, I would be very grateful.
