Johnston's store, flanked by the
dwelling and "black Abe Brothers"
blacksmith shop and mule (factory)
barn, a cotton warehouse, and topped
by Hardeman Lodge (Masonic) room,
was a lively place on Saturday
on or before the first quarter of
the moon. Mr. W. R. Johnston (Bill)
3
carried a line of staple and fancy
dry goods, hardware and groceries,
including barrels (with spigots)
of molasses, vinegar, and whiskey; which
was sold by the quart, gallon,
five gallons, or more, but a drink was free.
It was a great joke to shift the
vinegar and whiskey barrels, and hang
Page 12
the tin cup on the wrong barrel.
No Mason ever told his fellow members
of the exchange. Always at this
meeting, was slim, six-foot Uncle Joe
Johnston, with his eight hound
dogs; Marcus, Aurelius, Americus, Vespuccius,
Julius, Caesar, Nip and Tuck.
Sometimes the names of Nip and Tuck
were changed to Ulysses and Grant,
with the saying "Grant got mixed
up with a bull dog" (meaning
Gen. Joseph Johnston).
The two Johnstons and their
brother, Rev. Robert Johnston were
cousins of General Joseph Johnston
of the Confederate Army and came
to Texas after Sherman's march
through Georgia, the close of the war.
Notes for MARGARET ADELINE HUFF:
No children, Will from Texas
included in Journey.
Will mentions "brother, John

Bruce & J. D.
I have for many years been searching for my Johnston line in SC. My grandfather, Owen Benjamin Herbert Johnston was born in Charleston, SC in 1848. The 1850 SC census shows him in Charleston with his mother, Margaret, and a sister. A few years later his mother married William C. Crosby and moved to Savannah where my father was born. I have hired many genealogist in Savannah and SC to work on my line with me but none of us have been able to identify Owen's father. Some "experts" in the SC Archives believe Owen"s father to be Benjamin Johnston but there is no proof.

I have published several books on my mother's NC lines but started my research many years ago on my Johnston line and it is the only line I can get no further back than 1848.

J. D.,
I am replying to your message about your ancestor James Johnston,
orn 22 Feb 1780 probably in VA, who lived at some time in Spartanburg County,
C.
My ancestor Benjamin Ware Johnston was granted 140 acres in 1785 in
orth Greenville District by the state of SC, probably for Revolutionary War
ervice. We guess that he was born about 1760, but not sure. Benjamin's
arm was just a few miles west of the Spartanburg County line and south of
he North Carolina border. Benjamin's wife if unknown, but together they had
ight children according to the 1800 census of Greenville County. Three
ons are William, Joseph, and Aaron born 1785-1792, but we know almost nothing
f the other five children, except the census indicates they are one boy
nd four girls.
There were not many Johnstons living in this area according to the
790 and 1800 census records. What more can you tell me about your James
ohnston in Spartanburg?

My GGGgrandfather was Joseph Johnston, bd frb 22, 1780 probably in
irginia or South Carolina. Father may have been James but this has not been
erified by my family - yet. Joseph settled in Rome, Georgia,, and records
ave led us back to Spartanburg SC.

> I'd like to contact those who are descended from James Johnston, who
immigrated to America from Aberdeen, Scotland, with his (probably
econd)
wife,
Faith Leith, and sons William and John, before 1700.
William Johnston married Sarah Massie in 1698, and John married Lucretia
Massie in the same year, according to my information. I'd like to
onfirm
this information before I enter in my pedigree many generations of their
ancestry. I am descended from John and Lucretia.

Tom, I was wondering if you had any knowledge relatives of your James
ho
remained in Scotland. I have tried for years to find my Johnston
amily
and cannot get a lead. I was told " a member of my Family went to
merica"
and I know how that sounds, like thousands of people went to America and
Canada, but keep hoping I can get a lead.
y names include; William Johnston married Mary Gilmore, had 2 children
hat
know of ,Charles Alexander Johnston ( my grandfather) and Mary.
ne day I might strike it lucky, regards Desley
