Subject: [JOINES] Ezekiel Joines origin?
Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 14:10:45 -0400

To Ezekiel Joines descendents,

I just returned from a visit with my grandmother (maiden name Joines) in
Wilkes County, N.C. I was asking her questions about her grandmother Joines
and she couldn't tell me very much because she doesn't remember ever seeing
her Joines grandmother.

However, her grandmother helped raise one of my grandmother's first cousins
who dabbled in genealogy later in his life. He would write letters to my
grandmother. Mixed in with comments about his health, the weather and the
state of the world, he would include stories their grandmother told him and
stuff he found during his genealogical research. My grandmother didn't pay a
lot of attention and when he died a few years ago she burned most of his
letters.

This weekend let me borrow some we could find easily. In one letter the
cousin tells my grandmother that he has traced the Joines family back to
Ezekiel Joines (1726-1802). He said Ezekiel Joines come from Edinburgh,
Scotland, via London, England, and Amsterdam, Holland, to what is now the
United States. He doesn't list a date on when the emigration occurred nor
does he list sources in this particular letter.

I'm going to see if I can find more letters, but I'm afraid any other
information that might have been in his letters has went up in smoke. I'm
also going to see if I track down the cousin's son and see if his research
materials still exist.

Regards, KD Hatton
