This was sent to me by a cousin. I don't know if anyone on the list is
interested in Bales School. It was a one room school house that had grades 1
thru 8 in Washington Co, KS. The school was torn down about 1953. I was
only 7 at the time & dad took me by it when we were visiting in 1953 (we
lived in Washington State at the time) & I have the school register for 1936
- 1940, my dad got it out of the rubble when they were tearing it down. My
parents were both teachers at the school (Kenneth Bennett & Ruth Brown). I
thought I would post this to the list for anyone who is interested. -

Lawrence Newcomb, Leota Smith (Moore), Orville Elliott started the idea of
putting up a marker where the Bales School was at. They had Tony Scheer (a
black smith) in Morrowville make the plack he did it for 50.00. Those that
have been contacked are Basil Elliott lives in Morrowville, Doris Smith
(Taylor) lives in Wichita, Dorothy Smith (Elliott) lives north of
Morrowville, Kathyn Dull (Waser) lives in Iowa. Kenneth Bennett lives in
Newberg, OR, Dorothy Whelie (sp) lives some where in Iowa. Mabel Walkemeyer
(Gordon) lives north of Morrowville. Viola Kearns (Kearns) lives in
Washington. Ina Walkemeyer (Carriker)

There are a lot of them that have passed away Betty, Wayne, Dale Smith,
Eleanor Newcomb, Maxine Newcomb all gone. Norma Jennings don't know where
she is. I didn't go and get any of the pictures to see who we missed. I
don't think I wrote all this down before but most of it I did. I haven't
seen the plack as yet. Wanted your Dad if he would like to go in with us
for 3.00 or what ever he wanted to give to send it to Orville Elliott, 2317
King Rd, Morrowville, Ks 66958. Kenneth and Orville used to write to one
another but some how it kinda got lost in writting to one another.
