Pat asked
Am trying to trace ancestors from Ohio to Kansas to Arkansas.
Migrated to Kansas where 3 children were born (1881 - 1885). He then moved
on to Arkansas, where two more children were born. He raised his family in
or near Ft. Smith.
Pat you might want to start with the 1880 census which is available at the
LDS site to see if your couple is still in OH or are already in Kansas. If
you find them there is an 1885 Kansas State census that you can borrow at no
charge at your local library (they borrow it from the Kansas State
Historical Society) and there is also an 1895 census. You didn't tell us
when the children were born in Arkansas but you should be able to find them
on the Arkansas or Kansas soundex for 1900.
When you locate them in Kansas, if they are in a small town in Kansas you
can borrow newspapers at no charge from the Kansas State Historical Society
interlibrary loan program ... you probably won't find listings of their
births if they are in a large town like Wichita or Topeka.
Good luck to you.
