Dr. Peter D. FLEMING
San Jose, Calif. - Private memorial services were April 11 at San Jose for
Dr. Peter D. FLEMING, 68, San Jose, formerly of Topeka, Kan. He died April 8
at his home. He had cancer.
Dr. FLEMING recently closed his practice in psychotherapy at Good Samaritan
Medical Center in San Jose, where he was affiliated since 1975.
He previously served on the staff of the Menninger Foundation in Topeka from
1949 until 1975 when he moved to California. In addition to his duties as
staff psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, he was director of C.F. Menninger
Memorial Hospital from 1963 until 1975.
He also was a teacher and supervisor of hundreds of psychiatrists and
psychologists in training and was a consultant for the Peace Corps. Vista and
U.S. information Agency.
Dr. FLEMING was a major in the Army Medical Corps, having served in the
Pacific, and was a member of the first parachute group that liberated
Corregidor in 1945.
It was during his Army service that he became interested in psychiatry.
He was born Nov. 18, 1917, at New York City, the son of Irving and Dorothy
GROSSMAN FLEMING. He was graduated from Washington University School of
Medicine, St. Louis, Mo.
Dr. FLEMING was a member of many professional organizations, including the
International Psychoanalytic Association, American Psychoanalytic
Association, American Psychiatric Association and was president of Central
Neuropsychiatric Hospital Association. He was chairman of the Good Samaritan
Medical Center Psychiatry Department from 1976 to 1977.
He was married to Vivian DOGGETT March 3, 1946, at Winters General Hospital
in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Fleming. San Jose; three sons,
John FLEMING, Colorado Springs, Richard FLEMING, Oakland, Calif., and
Christopher FLEMING, San Jose, and two grandchildren.
Dr. FLEMING was cremated and his ashes will be scattered at sea. Memorial
contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. Hospice of the Valley
or Parents Helping Parents. The Neptune Society in San Jose is in charge of
arrangements.
