years of age, claiming to be a farmer, Andreas left Baden, traveled to
Havre, and left on the Ship Admiral for New York, arriving on 15 Aug
1854. On the same ship were approximately 83 other people from Baden,
but no other Kastner's. There were approximately 393 German people
listed on the rolls, mostly German, but including some from France,
Switzerland, and Italy. Since the source of this information was
"Germans to America" there may also have been additonal people from
other countries not listed. On 10 Jan 1856, Karl Kastner appeared before
the Superior Court of Rastatt, Baden Archduchy, and stated that his
brother Andreas had immigrated to America in Jun 1854 to become a
citizen there. He, Andrease, was now asking for a belated permit to
leave his homeland. Karl states that his brother was not subject to
military service and had left no debts, but had left an estate of about
1000 florins, wtih the rights reserved to send it to hime at a later
date. This request for permission to leave was received and
acknowledged by the city council (whoses names were listed) on 14 Jan
1856. It was decreed that this request was to be printed once in the
local papaer so that if any creditors existed, they could come forward.
On 19 Feb 1856, the court clerk testified that the document had beeh
printed as ordered and thet there was now no evidence that Andreas
Kastner had left any debts. The last page of the document shows that
Andreas was granted his emigration permit, and that the printer had been
paid. The final entry is dated in Rastatt, 3 Mar 1856.
