19th Congressional District - page 367:

HON. REUBEN R. KAYLER, who has served for the last thirteen years as
bookkeeper for the York Daily Publishing Company and now a member of the
State Legislature from York County, is a son of
JOHN B. and RACHEL (ROCKEY) KAYLER, and was born in Newberry Township, York
County, PA, February 18, 1855. The KAYLERS are of Dutch descent and about
130 years ago a KAYLER and his wife came from Holland to near the site of
Goldsboro, York County, where they were among the pioneer settlers of the
neighborhood. Their oldest child was then six months of age and grew to
manhood in his adopted county where he followed farming, fishing and
shoemaking. He married BARBARA ZIMMERMAN, a daughter of NICHOLAS
ZIMMERMAN, whose brother died in Holland and left a large estate which
rightfully belonged to the Zimmermans of York County. To this marriage was
born several children, one of which, JACOB KAYLER was the grandfather of
the subject of this sketch. Jacob Kayler was a farmer and shoemaker, and
married ESTHER BURGER by whom he had two sons and three daughters: Eliza,
wife of JOHN C. RONEY, of Shiremanstown, Cumberland county; MARY wife of
CYRUS REHER, of New Cumberland, this state; JOHN B.; NANCY, widow of HENRY
PRETZ; and REUBEN, who died when young. John B. Kayler was born in
Newberry Township, where he followed farming, and shoemaking and where he
died in 1858. He wedded RACHEL ROCKEY. They had two children: REUBEN R.,
and HOWARD B., of Baltimore, Md.

Reuben R. Kayler was not four years of age at the time of his father's
death, and after being bound out for a short time was taken by his
grandfather KAYLER, with whom he remained and worked on t he farm until he
was 17 years of age. He then worked at milling for two years, learned the
trade of cigar making and shoemaking and spent two years in a drug store at
Mechanicsburg, this State, which he left on account of ill health.
Returning to cigar making he found time to attend school and fit himself
for teaching, which he followed for three years, and then in 1883,
purchased a book store, at York, PA which was swept away in the June flood
of 1884. Four months later, in October of the last year, he became
bookkeeper for the York Daily Publishing Company which position he held
until l1896, when he was elected to a seat in the State Legislature of
Pennsylvania, and again resumed after the session.

On August 14, 1879, Mr. Kayler married ANNA L. KAIN, a daughter of John and
Susan KAIN, of West Manchester Township, York County. To their union have
been born three children: MARY E., JOHN ROY, who died at the age of 6
months, and ROBERT EUGENE.

Reuben R. Kayler is a member of the Union Lutheran church, and in politics
has always been a Democrat. He has served as justice of the peace in West
Manchester.
