Subject: [SMITH] Major Lawrence Smith-Gloucester Co.,Va.(1629 - 1700)

Hi List: There has been activity recently on the line of Major Lawrence
Smith of England and Virginia. I would be very interested in
establishing
contact with any descendants of a son of Lawrence Smith and Mary Dednam
(Debnam), Augustine Smith and his wife Susannah Walters, of Essex and
Orange County, Va.

I would like to share primary source documentation including wills,
court
records and land deed references that detail this family with emphasis
on
his descendants, Thomas Smith of Essex, Samuel Smith and Rachel Pain of
Essex and Nottoway Parish, Amelia County, Dr. Griffin Smith and ___
Bolling
of Nottoway Co. and Wilkes County/Baldwin County, Georgia and Moses
Smith
and Bethana Morris of Wilkes and Jones County, Ga.

Much has been written about Major Lawrence Smith, due in part to his
maternal grandfather, Lawrence Towneley, who was also the 5th
great-grandfather of George Washington. The record is much less complete
for Augustine and also few plublished accounts contain consistent and/or
correct information. For example, most sources report the wife of
Augustine Smith as Susanna Darnall/Susannah Darnell and this marriage is
recorded in Virginia Marriage Records in Fairfax Co. under the first
spelling and Fauquier Co. under the second spelling. Both are recorded
as
December 30, 1780. However the will of Augustine, son of Lawrence, was
unsigned and undated, was accepted in open court in Orange County, Va.
on
July 20, 1736 and his son-in-law, Robert Slaughter gave bond as
Administrator.

I am including an outline descendant tree for Augustine which may help
others. A genealogy report can be sent as an attachment with source
notes
or without as you prefer. It is absolutely astounding the number of
descendants of this family which includes governors of at least four
states
and founders of numerous cities including Fredericksburg, Va. for which
Augustine Smith received a Crown Charter to lay out a town at "The Falls
of
the Rappahannock" on land granted to his father, Major Lawrence Smith,
for
the purpose of building the first fort (Falmouth) on or about 1666 to
provide protection for the colonists from Indian attack. A most
interesting family.
