Hello All,
I enquired recently about my 6 x great grandfather Joseph Tanner who
married Mary Brattle in Snodland on 23 June 1702. The entry described
them both as servants, and "both of Town Malling". I have just learned
from another lister that this was another name for West Malling. I
immediately checked my Tanner entries extracted from a film of West
Malling General Register, only to find the following: "A registry of
all the christenings/marriages/burials within the parish of West Malling
... beginning in the year of our Lord 1698".
To locate a baptism or birth of Joseph Tanner who married in 1702, I
need to search say between 1670 and 1680 or thereabouts. Can anyone
advise me what the most likely alternative parish would have been for
people of West Malling to go to baptise their children before the West
Malling register began in 1698? I checked my East Malling notes and
don't seem to have any Tanner baptisms before 1710. Does anyone know if
the years prior to 1700 have been indexed for East Malling? I would
really appreciate any help as I have been stuck for ages trying to
locate Joseph Tanner's baptism! Indeed, if anyone should sight a
baptism for a Joseph Tanner in the years mentioned, in the vicinity of
either West or East Malling, Snodland, Maidstone area, I would be
delighted to hear from them.
Regards,
Janice.
