Hi Don and all,
As far as I am aware, that is exactly what has happened here in the UK! I cannot
remember denominations, churches or even which counties, but there have been
quite a few refusals from the authorities for permission to film records. If
they would only think ahead, this is a perfect way to record the data for
posterity and to ensure that it is never lost.
When I was at the London Metropolitan Archives last, they had a Rogues Gallery
display of burnt, water-damaged and destroyed Parish Records that were obviously
gone for good. If the LDS had been allowed to film them, not all would have been
lost. In fact, I have heard of a church who did allow filming to take place,
only to suffer a fire the following month when all the records were destroyed.
They were very grateful for the LDS then!
It is very important to remember that the IGI online is a very valuable finding
aid, but not much more than that. It is certainly _not_ a complete record of all
of the UK's parish registers, and can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a
help (tho' not often, I must admit). Always verify what you find on it by
checking the actual films where possible, as some entries are submitted by LDS
members from their family trees and not from filmed registers, and never take it
for granted that it is a correct record - remember the transcription error's on
the 1881 index? On that, it took me rather a long time to find my g-grandfather,
Arthur Boorman, even though I had his birthyear and rough area of birth, until I
checked through all the A's - and found him noted as AUTHOR! Unfortunately, the
error was repeated on the 1881 CD's, so my poor g-granddad is preserved for all
time in all countries with the wrong first name.<g>
