Thanks to everyone on the list for their replies. Below are some that I
received offlist. Can someone confirm that Southport is the central office
for BMD?(I thought it was in London). And any explanation why one lady got 2
types of copy from the same office as described below?

I have had certificates ordered from the PRO in London. Some are genuine
photocopies of original others have been rewritten. In fact by mistake I
ordered the same birth cert twice one was original writing the other copied!
I have no idea why

If you order a copy of the certificate from the GRO in Southport, they
'produce' a copy of the original certificate. It is not a transcribed copy.
It costs 8 UK pounds if you know the GRO reference, 11 UKP if you don't.
As I understand it, you can order any BMD certificate that is entered on the
GRO indexes from 1837 to date. All BMDs have to be recorded here as it
isthe
central office for BMD. That's why they have the original entry.
