sOMEBODY ASKED ME ABOUT HOFFMANN, AND SINCE THIS IS
ONE FAMILY I AM NOT TOTALLY SURE OF I AM POSTING WHAT
I HAVE (WITHIN THE LIMITS OF PASTING INTO AN E-MAIL
WINDOW) IN THE HOPE THAT SOMEBODY WILL BE ABLE TO
EXPAND MY KNOWLEDGE.

BRENDAN WEHRUNG

HOFFMANN

Asswiller was once the seat of the Seigneur of
Asswiller, a rich and powerful man with his own
fortified chateux. As such it it was a place people
would gravitate to, and which would have a church with
its own pastor. Fortunes changed, and the chateux was
pulled down. The church survived, but its books did
not. In [NEED DATE] Pator Lamberti died, but, as a
note inserted in the church records when they were
filmed by the Mormons says, his book was lost by his
successors. Thus, unless Asswiller is mentioned in
some other village's records (very rare) no records
applicable to genealogy exist until 1710. After that,
they are continuous, and may be seen on LDS film #
.
It is difficult--impossible, given surviving
records--to know if descent from the Hoffman families
of Asswiller traces back to one or two ancestors. For
the record, and not because there is any proof one way
or the other, it is possible that HANS GEORG HOFFMANN,
who died Mar. 29 1755 at 90 years of age was the
father or brother to all bearing the Hoffmann name.
The chart below is based only on conjecture and not on
provable fact: it is based on the grouping of known
birth dates and is consistent with the idea that they
all sprang from one family. HEINRICH HOFFMANN [540]
is a special case, in that nothing from which to
derive a birth year. However, since he had to be
around age 20 when he married, he could have been born
no later than 1683, and was in all probality much
older than that (his first wife, ANNA MARGARETHA [541]
was born c1663), making him a likely brother of Hans
Georg. This then is my guess of the relationship of
the two Hoffmann families which make up our ancestry:

[CHART WHICH GOT MESSED UP WHEN I TRIED TO PASTE IT IN
THE NARROW WINDOW YAHOO PROVIDES]

Obviously, I could be wrong, and one of the Hoffmann
ancestors could have come from outside Asswiller,
sicne hiw was a by no means uncommon name. So I will
now present each family as a seperate entity,
beginning with the older of the two.

Heinrich Hoffmann

There is no guarantee that records found in church
books, other than the actual date that the even was
recorded, will be correct. And information is often
left out. So it is possible that Heinrich Hoffmann
was only about 50 when he died (no age at death is
given). But when his first wife died her age was
given, as 50 years, and if he was just slightly older
than her, he would ahve been born about 1660. Of
course, if she was born in 1663, she was 41 when their
only recorded son was born, and it there really ought
to be more unplaced Hoffmann names than appear in the
surviving Asswiller church books--but there are not.
Just where Heinrich came from, and where the rest of
his family might be will have to remain a mystery.

Friedrich Hoffmann

A aproximate birth year is available for Friedrich
Hoffmann, although like Heinrich, his first marriage
was recorded in the church book which was lost. So he
might have had more children than are shown here,
although--again--they do not show up in any later
preserved record.
