Hi everyone:

I'm looking for John CONN from Mt. Ida, Waterford/Kilkenny who was the
father of John CONN, listed on page 67 of "The Trafalgar Roll" by Col.
Robert Holden Mackenzie (Greenhill Books, 1989). He is shown as Captain
of HMS Dreadnought, 98 guns, sister ship to the "Fighting Temeraire".
On
page 69, the following is written about him:

"Captain J. Conn, a member of the Irish family of that name at Mount
Ida,
Waterford, was born in Ireland in 1764, and entered the service in 1778.
Became Lieut. in 1793. He was lieut. in the Royal Sovereign in Lord
Howe's victory of the 1st June 1794. Commander, 1800. Commanded the
Discovery, bomb, at the battle of Copenhagen, 1801. ... Commanded the
Dreadnought, 98, in the battle of Trafalgar, 1805, when the Spanish 74,
San Juan, struck to her. Received a gold medal, and a sword of honour
from the Patriotic Fund. When in command of the Swiftsure, was drowned
off the Bermudas, in 1810. He was a cousin, by marriage, to Lord
Nelson,
having married a daughter of Rev. Isaac Nelson, Rector of Meldon and
Vicar of Mitford." Meldon and Mitford are close to Morpeth,
Northumberland.

According to the IGI, John CONN, Father: John CONN, Mother: Ann Frances
(surname unlisted) was chr. 5 Aug 1764 at Stoke Damerel, Devon, England;
a sister Mary Ann CONN was my direct ancestor, who married Robert
WILLCOCKS at St. Mary's Portsea on 28 Dec 1797. John CONN's marriage to
Margaret NELSON took place on 19 Jan 1792 at Stoke Damerel, Devon,
England.

It is possible that their mother was Ann Frances COOPER, as one child
was
Charles Cooper CONN, c. 5 Oct 1773. Ann was c. 19 Jul 1747 at Stoke
Damerel, Devon, England. Her father was Daniel Cooper b. 3 Oct 1705 m.
5
Feb 1745, of Budbie (at birth) and Edwinstowe (marriage) Nottingham,
England. Another sibling of John and Mary Ann CONN was William Oakley
CONN c. 5 Oct 1770 at Stoke Damerel, which suggests that at least one
ancestor of theirs was an OAKLEY. The COOPER connection is a much
better
fit to the data, and I just haven't yet looked up the film to verify it.

If anyone has information on the John CONN line in Mount Ida, I'd like
to
hear from you. I looked up Mount Ida on the 1" OS map and found it
about
4 miles N of Waterford, which probably puts it into Kilkenny Co., close
to the River Barrow.
