Several authorities do indeed claim Killeen as a variant. I haven't seen
that in the records I've looked up, but it sounds plausible. In the
records I've frequently seen Killion and Killian used interchangeably in
the same family.

Now try saying that with different Irish accents, perhaps spoken by someone
who doesn't speak English, and then posted to records by someone who speaks
only English who many have any of a wide variety of English accents!
I suspect that the Germans many have more control over the spellings due to
far better attention to documentation and records, and literacy in the
"official" language. (In Ireland, pre-19th century, many or most people
did not speak the "official" language!)
